KANKU RAGA
Commissioned by and originally shown at Usher Gallery Lincoln, this video piece is one in an on going series involving tabla rhythms to inform the kanku body marking.Based on a repeating 16 beat cycle TIN TAAL, Kanku Raga assigns each stroke from the tabla drum language to a different movement of marking or erasing from the body. The result is a disected rhythm structure presented visually and audibly.
Despite the aesthetic and digital presentation of this work, it is important to note that the rhythm structure that informs it has not been altered from its historical beginnings.
