220 animation drawings (a4 each drawing)

This rotoscope animation is part of an ongoing series which began with God is a DJ. It is a collection of animations from live footage of different mothers, including my own, enacting daily domestic routines. This medium allows me to omit details such as the protagonists’ skin colour and the specifics of where they are and what they are doing. It removes the specifics of their race and class, whilst retaining their physical imprint. I’m interested here to focus the viewer’s attention to the repetition of her domestic movements out of context. I’m interested to highlight the inherited and practiced movements of day-to-day life that often remain hidden. Maestro features Jelena Zvirska folding a bed sheet in her living room in Wandsworth, London.

This representation of Jelena’s work, sits alongside the physical results of mine – the 220 hand drawn images of her used for the animation.
