KORI PATELS
KORI PATELS has been developed in response to a research visit I made to India in late 2004. Whilst acknowledging my roots within the UK, I travelled to my cultural homeland in the hope that I would gain a deeper understanding of the culture to which I essentially belong. However, the cultural signifiers I posses felt borrowed, taken from a heritage that couldn't be fully understood on my part do it's dislocated nature in the U.K. It became apparent over time that the journey I was embarking upon, and the concerns I had, would manifest in a search closer to my home and family back in England.Unravelling the complexities that exists between the British born generation of which I am part and the generation of immigrant Indians that are my family, is ever present. Kori Patels explores how the culture and sensibilities of the Western world has impacted upon on my family members, the legacy of an Indian mindset, cultural mannerisms and the way in which they reveal themselves.
This body of work was produced as part of PAVILION's commissioning programme 2007.
