Video installation and live performances in collaboration with Louise Clements and Jason Singh
JHAPTAAL is the name of a ten beat repeating rhythm structure from Indian classical music. In this new work, three artists of three different disciplines and backgrounds explore the parameters of this musical structure. In both the video installation and the live performances traditional Indian Kathak dance interacts with vocal and physical percussion with origins ranging from Indian classical to hip-hop. These British born artists are interested in what it means to have this traditional Indian rhythm structure as a parameter for their performance interactions with one another.
With the separate elements of video installation and live performance highlighting differences between the carefully constructed and the improvised, the works together look to question notions of cultural identity and origin through the artists’ varying familiarity with western and Indian classical rhythm.
